Safety in the mountains is paramount. Time and again, mountaineers are surprised or injured by a sudden thunderstorm or other natural forces only to be spontaneously faced with the question: "What is the Alpine emergency number?"
What to do in case of an emergency?
It’s not possible to make an emergency call without a network signal or when in the radio shadow. Move to a better location and dial 112 regularly. When dialling a European emergency number, you have access to any available network if you enter 112 instead of the PIN code after switching on your phone or when making an emergency call using the SOS emergency call function.
Smartphone users should install the free "SOS-EU-ALP" app BEFORE their tour and perform a the test run. The app helps to make an emergency call. At the same time, it transmits the location via GPS data as well as GPS call time, battery status of the smartphone, and altitude and contact data.
Kurt Nairz (Regional Director of the Tirol Mountain Rescue Service) says:
“The rapid provision of location info creates more time. Time is often the critical factor in an emergency."
