A tranquil natural gem

The Hintersteinersee lake spans 56 hectares and is up to 36 metres deep. It is located in the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve, high above Scheffau at 883 metres above sea level. A hike around the Hintersteinersee lake leaves a deep impression as you peer into the depths.

The path climbs a little on the southern shore and offers magnificent views of the turquoise blue water of the crystal clear mountain lake. The northern bank of the lake is accessible to everyone thanks to a road.

There is also an attractive, small natural beach lido. For the Hintersteinersee lake in Scheffau, being the most beautiful and cleanest natural bathing lake in Tirol is award enough.

Arrival and Parking

Please not that there is a chargeable, limited parking area for cars on the eastern shore of the Hintersteiner See lake. Motorhomes and coaches are not allowed to park here! Access is not permitted for coaches of 10 metres or more in length due to the narrow road to Hintersteiner See. But fortunately, you do not need a car to get to the lake.

In order to keep the traffic as low as possible, we kindly ask you to use the free hikers' bus from Scheffau's village centre to the Hintersteiner See lake.

Hintersteiner See hikers’ bus

The “Hintersteinersee hikers’ bus" runs daily from during summer months between the village of Scheffau and the Hintersteiner See lake. Use is free of charge with a Wilder Kaiser GuestCard.
