To the toursThe village square is the heart and soul of Going. It is also where the Gasthof Wilder Kaiser inn is located. Since the shooting of the show started, the picturesque former farmhouse – inhabited by its owner, Johann Gschwendtner – has been transformed into an on-screen inn.
“There is a lot of hustle and bustle during shooting periods”, the elderly landlord explained. “My own bedroom is the only place that stays peaceful!” When the film crew is not in town, the house is quiet – but it could doubtlessly tell you plenty of stories from its eventful life.
The village square is home to a beautiful stone fountain from the 1960s, adorned with a copper statue of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
Tips & Info
In summer, a Bergdoktor cabin is set up on the church square in Going. Visit it for more information about the filming location and a nice little surprise.
No coach access to the Going village square! Coaches and cars may park at the car park of the Going Fire Station (10 minutes on foot to the village square).
Gasthof Wilder Kaiser, the inn from the show, is filmed in two locations. The exterior shots are of the historical merchant’s house on the village square of Going, while the interior shots are of the renowned Föhrenhof restaurant in Auwald, a district of Ellmau.
The Föhrenhof restaurant has been a fine-dining hot spot ever since Eduard and Annemarie Told built it in 1967. Today, their sons Robert and Ewald Told manage the establishment, which is the centrepiece of a family-run business that also includes a hotel with forty beds.
What makes the family-run Föhrenhof in Ellmau special is its cuisine, which has remained excellent for more than 40 years, and its lovely ambience. The Bergdoktor landlady Susanne Dreiseitl, played by von Natalie O’Hara, loves spending time at the Föhrenhof – we’re not surprised!
The Litzlalm alpine farm and its surrounding pastures, the Litzlwiese, span an area of about 2 km² at an altitude of 1,300–1,500 metres. During the summer months, up to 90 cattle graze here. At its centre, visitors can find a ‘Jausenstation’ – the Austrian term for a mountain inn serving hearty snacks and light snacks (Austrian: ‘Jause’).
Its spectacular location and the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains – in particular, the Mühlsturzhörner summits of the Reiter Alm range – have made the Litlzalm a popular filming location for many Heimatfilme and TV shows. Some parts of Der Bergdoktor season 11 were filmed at the Litzlalm: one of its farmhouses stars as Uncle Ludwig’s cabin!
In winter, the Stanglleit is a ski slope leading directly into the town centre of Ellmau.
It has also starred as a competition slope in various winter specials of the popular show “Der Bergdoktor” (The Mountain Doctor). To shoot a single scene, 200 extras and the entire children’s ski club of Ellmau have to be on location.
