"Film Village Ellmau" from the Edelweiß King to the Mountain Doctor

Exhibition in the Local Museum from June 27 to July 25, 2025 with photographic treasures & film history from the Wilder Kaiser

Not only the popular TV series "The Mountain Doctor" has been filmed at Wilder Kaiser since 2007, but Ellmau already provided an impressive film backdrop for the adaptation of Ludwig Ganghofer's tale "The Edelweiß King" in 1938 with the Kaiser Mountains. This was followed by other homeland films with love dramas and mountain adventures, such as the feature film "VIOLANTA," shot here in 1942, in which Georg Gogl, the then innkeeper of Gasthof Au, participated as an extra with his horse and carriage, receiving 15 unique photos from the filming as a keepsake. His daughter Erna Kopp will share stories about the photos and their history during the opening. This and other shots of film scenes in Ellmau and the Kaiser Mountains form the heart of the special exhibition "Film Village Ellmau".

The exhibition also focuses on "The Mountain Doctor," which has been in operation in Ellmau for 18 seasons. On the opening evening, hosted by Peter Moser, members of the "Mountain Doctor" family are expected, as well as Christian Ronning, the series' production manager for 19 years, and his wife Ingrid, who, as a location scout, continuously finds special filming locations and, like the TV stars, can share anecdotes from nearly twenty years of shooting in our region.
To conclude the exhibition, the entertaining feature film "Ski Instructor Cilli," shot locally in 1956, will be shown as an open-air cinema at the museum on Friday evening, July 25, at 9 PM, with free admission. Alongside the amusing film story, Ellmau from back then will surely be the main star!
