Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser
From the car park below the Restaurant Jägerwirt inn you hike along the forest road following the signs to Wegscheidalm. The narrow wooden bridge over the Wegscheidbach stream is the snowshoe tour’s first crux.
After reaching the Wegscheid-Niederalm you leave the forest road and follow the footpath to the Kaiseralm. Here you cross the Wegscheidbach stream a second time and follow the signs to the Kaiseralm. After a short time the Kaiseralm comes into view and you hike in a straight line over the Alpine meadows in deep snow to the mountain hut. You now go downhill again following the road in a south-westerly direction - signposts to Schiessling - and shortly before you come to the Schiesslinghöfe farmhouses you turn off to the left and follow the footpath via the Treffernhof to the Restaurant Jägerwirt. This is also the only refreshment stop on this snowshoe hike.
CAUTION: this hike should only be undertaken when there’s absolutely no risk of avalanches. The section after the Kaiseralm heading to Schiessling should only be attempted by hikers with experience of avalanches and avalanche equipment.
