Summer Solstice Bonfires

20 June 2026 – The night the mountains glow

When the longest day meets the shortest night, summer at the Wilder Kaiser is welcomed with glowing mountaintop fires – an ancient tradition recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Every year, local clubs and associations head into the mountains to light their bonfires and celebrate the arrival of summer. As night falls, the mountains come alive with the glow of solstice fires, creating a mystical and unforgettable atmosphere. These fires are also known as St John’s bonfires.

In many parts of Tyrol, Sacred Heart fires (Herz-Jesu-Feuer) are also lit on this night – a tradition that dates back to 1796 and the Sacred Heart of Jesus vow, which symbolised Tyrolean unity in the struggle against French and Bavarian forces. Back then, fires were lit across the mountains to honour the oath – a powerful symbol still echoed today.
