Kaiserschmarrn Festival in Ellmau
One of Austria's favourite pastries
According to legend, the cook of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I once botched a batch of pancake batter and accidentally tore it while serving. The emperor is said to have exclaimed, “What is this mess?” – to which the quick-witted chef replied, “It’s a Kaiserschmarrn!”
And so, in 1854, Kaiserschmarrn found its way into Austrian cuisine – and it has remained one of the country’s most beloved desserts ever since.
In honour of this sweet tradition, the innkeepers of Ellmau host an annual festival celebrating all things Kaiserschmarrn, accompanied by lively Tyrolean folk music.
Whether served in the classic style or with a creative twist, the Kaiserschmarrn Festival offers a wide variety of delicious interpretations of this iconic dish.
