What today is above all an impressively beautiful spectacle was originally a sign of resistance: When in 1796 French troops under Napoleon I threatened the province of Tyrol, the provincial governments requested the divine assistance of the "Sacred Heart of Jesus" against the invaders. As a sign of the alliance of all Tyroleans and for the common beginning of the battle, they set fire to the religious motifs on the mountain ridges and vowed to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus annually.

In the year 1796 French troops under Napoleon I threatened the province of Tyrol; the Estates petitioned the divine assistance of the "Sacred Heart" against the invaders. As a sign of the Alliance of Tyrol and the common struggle for the beginning of time, they kindled the religious motives of the ridge and vowed to celebrate the annual feast of the Sacred Heart. Until today they keep their promise.
