Kaiserschmarrn Festival in Ellmau
One of Austria’s most popular pastries
According to tradition, the chef of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I failed to make the Palatschinken batter properly and accidentally tore it whilst serving it. The Emperor is said to have replied: “What on earth is this nonsense?” The chef replied with quick wit: “That’s a Kaiserschmarrn!”
And so, in 1854, the Kaiserschmarrn found its way into Austrian cuisine and has been one of the most popular desserts in our country ever since.
In honour of this delicacy, the innkeepers of Ellmau organise an annual festival featuring numerous ‘Kaiserschmarrn specialities’, accompanied by lively Tyrolean folk music.
Whether served in the traditional style or as an accompaniment to a main course, a wide variety of Schmarrn variations are on offer at the “Kaiserschmarrn Festival”.
