All series of *Bergdoktor*
Seasons 1–18 at a glance
Since 2007, the Neue Deutsche Filmgesellschaft (ndF) has been filming a new series of the popular TV series *Der Bergdoktor* every summer in the Wilder Kaiser region. The series is broadcast on ZDF and ORF.

Following Rolf’s death, Caro initially takes over the agricultural supplies business, but a new will names Lilli as the principal heir. Despite her uncertainty, Lilli accepts the inheritance, becomes managing director and dismisses Caro, but soon realises that she can hardly shoulder the responsibility on her own. Following some conflicts, Caro returns and later takes over the management again after Lilli develops a deep sense of guilt over Xaver’s accident. Xaver had a serious accident following a journey Lilli had arranged, but initially cannot remember it due to herpes-related encephalitis.
Lilli’s private life also spirals out of control: because of her work, she neglects David, who grows close to Josie and kisses her, though he does not initially admit this to Lilli. Martin is living happily with Karin, whilst Hans and Julia find their way back to each other after taking a break from their relationship and having brief flings. Lisbeth is secretly planning her own funeral and has drawn up a will to that effect with a solicitor. Angelika’s new girlfriend, Vanessa, starts work as an assistant at the clinic, causing tension between Vera and Alexander.
In the end, Franziska makes a surprise announcement that she is visiting from New York so that Martin can meet his son Johann. However, Martin is deeply hurt when he learns that Johann calls Franziska’s partner Marc ‘Dad’ and does not know that Martin is his biological father.
In the 18th series of the popular ‘Der Bergdoktor’, things get personal, emotional and dramatic. Against the stunning backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser, Dr Martin Gruber struggles not only with extraordinary medical cases, but also with profound changes in his private life.
The new series calls everything into question: relationships are put to the test, old wounds are reopened, and new paths open up. Martin’s relationship with Karin grows more intense – yet harmony is a rare commodity. Family tensions and the legacy of past decisions weigh heavily on the Gruberhof. At the same time, Martin must, as ever, save his patients’ lives with sensitivity and medical skill – but this time, his own happiness is also at stake.
A dramatic event shakes the family to its core and pushes the otherwise composed doctor to his limits. Nevertheless, he manages to make a courageous fresh start – with surprising consequences for everyone close to him.
Martin is once again facing major challenges – both professionally and privately. As well as complicated medical cases that demand his empathy and expertise, his family life is also being put to the test. His relationship with his family is becoming increasingly strained, whilst old and new love stories are tugging at his heartstrings. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser, Martin fights for the well-being of his patients and to maintain a balance in his own life.
Lisbeth is in hospital following her breakdown. However, she does not want Martin to be involved in her examinations. Martin has to come to terms with this for the time being. He and his brother Hans start talking to each other again. Martin offers to help Hans with the farm. As his originally planned stay in New York has been postponed until further notice, he accepts an invitation from Karin Bachmeier.
Martin is finding it hard to come to terms with his split from Anne and the fact that his son is living in the USA with Franziska. Anne is missed on the farm, and the Gruberhof is once again in serious financial difficulties. Meanwhile, Lilli starts a work placement at the clinic. There she meets her grandfather and her aunt – Rolf and Caro Pflüger – and her interest in her late mother’s family grows. Martin and his brother Hans agree that they want to keep the Pflügers at arm’s length, but then Rolf Pflüger, of all people, takes the initiative and makes a promising offer. He wants to become a partner in Grubermilch, but Hans is convinced that too close a connection to his late wife’s family would not be good for the Grubers as a family. Caro, who supports her father’s plan, urges Martin to persuade his brother to change his mind. In doing so, he comes under pressure, as a secret from the past threatens to come to light.
Martin decides to make a confession, deeply hurting his brother Hans in the process. The whole family is on the verge of falling apart. In this difficult situation, Martin receives a surprising invitation. He is to visit his son Johann and Franziska in New York. As all his attempts at reconciliation have failed, he looks for a successor to take over his practice and arranges for an apartment in New York. Neither Lisbeth nor Lilli can persuade him to stay. He does not know how long he wants to stay…
Franziska wants to move to New York before her son is born. Martin certifies that she is fit to fly, but during the flight to America she collapses and ends up in intensive care. This lands Martin in serious trouble. Franziska’s mother, Thea, wants to deny him access and report him for negligence. The Medical Council is also threatening to take action. Franziska is unaware of any of this; she is in a coma. Her son is collected whilst she remains unconscious. But Thea demands that Martin relinquish custody and, as a means of pressure, has the Gruber milk bottling plant shut down. Only when Franziska finally wakes from her coma can Martin and Anne bring the little boy to live with them at the Gruber farm. There, Anne lovingly looks after Martin’s son, Johann.
Meanwhile, Martin is also dealing with daily setbacks and the unique medical histories of his patients. Lilli, on the other hand, is considering helping out in her boyfriend Robert’s workshop and quitting her job at the surgery in return.
Franziska soon starts to feel better and is able to take Johann back. Will she set off for New York straight away, and what will happen to Anne, who has been looking after her child for the past few weeks?
After years of ups and downs, Martin Gruber (Hans Sigl) is finally happy with his Anne (Ines Lutz). They are enjoying their time together and are only interrupted by the odd medical emergency.
But hard times are once again on the horizon at the Gruber farm. Franziska (Simone Hanselmann) is pregnant and Martin is the father. After Anne finds out about the pregnancy, she is devastated. What will happen next? Martin is torn between his love for Anne and his future role as a father.
At the same time, however, he is also preoccupied with the fates of his patients. Will he be able to help them all, and what will become of his relationship with Anne and the Gruberhof?
Bernd Tannhofer (Anian Zollner) is the owner of a small cheese dairy and has suffered a sudden collapse. Dr Martin Gruber (Hans Sigl) is called to the mountain pasture to help. It all looks very much like an epileptic fit, but the cause cannot be found. However, when Tannhofer’s young son develops a high fever, Dr Kahnweiler (Mark Keller), Dr Fendrich (Rebecca Immanuel) and Dr Gruber suspect poisoning. But little by little, Martin’s investigations bring an appalling truth to light.
Meanwhile, Lisbeth (Monika Baumgartner) and Martin’s ex-girlfriend Anne (Ines Lutz) are pushing ahead with new plans for the future of the Gruberhof. Anne has decided to run the farm and turn a profit with the ‘Grubermilch’ own-brand. This situation is not entirely straightforward for Martin and Anne, but it does free Martin’s brother Hans (Heiko Ruprecht) from his hated duties, allowing him to move into the inn with his child and girlfriend Susanne (Natalie O’Hara) and enjoy a relaxed family life.
Martin Gruber is delighted to be reunited with his old friends Heiko and Hermine, with whom he spent time in New York many years ago. Together with his brother Hans, Martin organises a ski tour, led by the experienced mountain guide Tom and his girlfriend Nina. But the carefree day ends in disaster: the group is caught in an avalanche. Whilst Martin, Hans, Heiko and Nina manage to save themselves at the last second, there is no sign of Hermine and Tom. After a desperate search, both are rescued, suffering from severe hypothermia.
In their private lives, the tension between the Grubers and Uncle Ludwig is growing ever greater: he is demanding his share of the inheritance at the Gruberhof. His health is also deteriorating. Lisbeth meets Ludwig for dinner. She is agitated, as memories of their past affair keep resurfacing. Meanwhile, Martin is enjoying his casual affair with Franziska. However, the fact that she lives right next door to his ex-girlfriend Anne – who is currently going through a difficult time – causes a brief rift between them.
Now that mountain doctor Dr Martin Gruber has split up with Rike and seems to have sorted things out with his ex-girlfriend Anne, he could focus entirely on himself and his work. But new trouble is looming: Ludwig Gruber – the brother of Martin’s and Hans’s father, Johann Gruber – unexpectedly turns up in Ellmau. Twenty years ago, during a mountain hike the two brothers were on together, Johann died in an accident and Ludwig subsequently left his home town. Yet the family’s joy at this reunion is somewhat muted: Martin has never had a particularly good relationship with his uncle, and Lisbeth not only blames Ludwig for her husband’s death; her vehement rejection has entirely different reasons. Hans Gruber, on the other hand, has always been very fond of his uncle and is delighted to see him again. Lilli cannot understand all the fuss at all, especially as her great-uncle is seriously ill and wants to make peace. Yet Ludwig unwittingly drives a wedge between the family.
Dr Martin Gruber reopens his practice, and his patients present him with personal and professional challenges – particularly when he himself is admitted to Hall Hospital as a patient. Much to the displeasure of senior consultant Dr Kahnweiler and Dr Vera Fendrich, as here too the Mountain Doctor does things his own way. In his private life, Martin takes stock of the situation. He asks himself what he really wants. He had left his previous partner, Anne, following an argument, and his still-new relationship with insurance agent Rike is also hanging by a thread. For the future of the family-run farm, Lisbeth Gruber hopes that her son will make up with Anne. Rike, on the other hand, would like Martin to move in with her.
In the ninth series of the hit show, Dr Martin Gruber (Hans Sigl) once again has his hands full at work and fights with great tenacity for the welfare of his patients, as their fates affect him on a deeply personal level. Following the death of Arthur Distelmeier, he tries to make a fresh start with Arthur’s daughter Anne in their previously ill-fated romance. This attempt is put to the test when it comes to preventing Anne’s financial ruin. Meanwhile, Lilli is travelling in New Zealand, Hans is looking after the Gruber farm, and Lisbeth is still recovering from her smoke inhalation, although she would actually love to be back on the farm, bustling about.
A dramatic start to a series of further, fabulously gripping adventures in this successful medical drama set in the Wilder Kaiser region, starring Hans Sigl from Styria in the lead role. Following a botched rescue operation, the likeable mountain doctor finds himself in the throes of a serious crisis of faith and retreats to an Alpine guesthouse run by Ursula Strauss to rediscover himself. A very young avalanche victim is rescued alive from the snow. Despite all his efforts, however, mountain doctor Martin Gruber is unable to save the girl. It is a situation that almost breaks the courageous doctor. Plagued by nightmares, he begins to doubt his qualifications and completely shuts himself off from the world. In a remote mountain village, Martin tries to take some time out. There, however, his medical skills do not remain undiscovered for long, and once again Martin’s expertise is called upon.
Dr Martin Gruber wants to start a life together with Anne. At his father’s farm, Anne and Martin find a secluded love nest. Martin doesn’t stay at the Gruberhof for long, however, as Arthur is discharged from rehab and thwarts Martin and Anne’s plans. Hans starts flirting with Jonas’s teacher; Susanne finds out and kicks Hans out. Lilli is heartbroken because Carsten broke up with her when his band went on tour. Meanwhile, Dr Vera Fendrich moves in with Dr Kahnweiler, even though he does not approve of the relationship but is reluctant to speak his mind. Whilst Lisbeth had previously felt that she was no longer needed and that everyone was leaving her, by the end of the series her two sons are once again comfortably settled at the Gruberhof.
The Mountain Doctor is once again facing numerous challenges: as well as personal turmoil, mysterious cases of illness and spectacular rescue operations are pushing him to his limits. Dr Martin Gruber has finally put his last relationship behind him and actually wants to take things a bit easier when it comes to love for the time being. But then the feisty Anne Meierling casts a spell over him...
Events surrounding Martin Gruber are coming thick and fast. Of all people, Lena’s still-husband Tom is getting visibly worse whilst under Martin’s medical care. Lena blames her new partner Martin for this, and he feels that these accusations are putting their love for one another at risk. The ailing husband-to-be does nothing to ease the delicate situation between the two, as he tries to win Lena back. Lilli – Martin’s daughter – currently poses yet another problem for the mountain doctor...
The story continues with medical and personal conflicts in the life of mountain doctor Martin Gruber in the Wilder Kaiser region. Whilst he fears for the life of his girlfriend Andrea, his brother Hans calls off his wedding to Klara. And it’s not just a hiker in distress who urgently needs his help.
Things are hotting up at the Gruberhof and down in the valley too. Martin’s new love is threatening to leave him, then suddenly an ex-fiancée turns up at the door. But his brother Hans is also having his own difficulties in matters of the heart, whilst their mother Lisbeth has a crush on a restaurant critic and Lilli is truly in love for the first time.
Mountain doctor Martin Gruber has now settled back into his old Tyrolean home and has also fallen in love. Yet the idyll in the Wilder Kaiser region is not without its clouds. Dramatic conflicts dominate the Alpine doctor’s daily life – more than he would like.
Five years after his last visit to his family in the Wilder Kaiser region, Dr Martin Gruber returns to Ellmau from the USA, originally to attend his mother’s birthday. But then he learns that Lilli is his daughter, and Dr Melchinger persuades him to take over the local medical practice.
