SAFE Cross-Country Skiing

Tips and advice for your safety when cross-country skiing

As a health and nature sport, cross-country skiing offers great opportunities for fitness, adventure and community. The following recommendations serve to make cross-country skiing safer, nature-friendly and conflict-free.

Respectful interaction

Every cross-country skier must behave in such a way that nobody else is endangered or damaged.

Observance of the information signs

Markings and signals (information signs) must always be observed. On the respective cross-country ski runs and slopes, run in the indicated direction and with the appropriate technique.

Drive right also on the cross-country ski run

In case of double and multiple lanes, you must run in the right lane. This applies on the slopes for free technique (skating). Groups are encouraged to run one after the other in the right lane.

Cross-country skiers overtake attentively

Cross-country skiers may pass both left and right. The front runner is not asked to sidestep, but he should make room if it is safe to do so.

Avoiding and giving priority

In encounters, each runner has to dodge to the right and give priority to the cross-country skiers, who are skiing down.

Guide poles to the body

Sticks have to be held close to the body during encounters.

Assessing speed appropriately

Every cross-country skier must adapt his speed and behaviour to the terrain conditions, traffic density and visibility, especially on downhill stretches. Sufficient safety distance from the front runner must be maintained - if necessary, you must let yourself fall to prevent a collision.

Prevent accidents

Whoever stops or falls, steps out of the cross-country ski run or clears it as quickly as possible.

Providing first aid

In the event of accidents, everyone is obliged to provide assistance.

Whether witness, or accident participant - everyone must indicate his data in case of an accident.

Difficulty classifications

Easy slopes (marked blue)

Easy cross-country ski runs are mainly flat tracks, whose ascent and descent sections must not exceed 10% longitudinal inclination - with the exception of short sections in open terrain. Downhill runs of cross-country ski slopes for classical technique must be manageable in their entire length and must not force the cross-country skier to actively change direction. They are marked in BLUE.

Medium difficult slopes (marked red)

Medium difficult routes are mainly cross-country ski slopes which run in undulating terrain and whose ascent and descent distances must not exceed 20% longitudinal inclination - with the exception of short sections in open terrain. Downhill slopes of cross-of cross country ski runs for classic technique may contain curves which force the runner to actively change direction. They are marked in the colour RED.

Difficult slopes (marked black)

Difficult cross-country ski runs are those whose longitudinal inclinations on ascending and descending slopes exceed the maximum value for medium difficulty cross-country ski runs. They are marked in BLACK.

Classification according to type of use

Cross-country ski trail for classical technique

A track which is prepared and groomed in flat terrain and on uphill and downhill stretches which are to be driven in a straight line, in any case on downhill stretches with a change of direction, but only on those stretches where the track does not pose a danger to runners. With the exception of uphill and downhill sections, cross-country ski runs for classic technique may only be run in running technique with

Please use the walking bag and throw it into the nearest rubbish bin to avoid soiling the pasture and nature. Help to keep nature clean. To avoid problems with other winter sports enthusiasts such as cross-country skiers or snowshoe hikers - please keep dogs on a leash!

Garbage
Nature is a precious commodity - so please keep the mountains clean and do not leave any waste behind! Waste is still here - even if you have been away for a long time!
