Advent in the Wilder Kaiser Region
The Christmas market in Going in particular is a winter fairytale out of handcarved nativitiy scenes with angels out of delicate lace, fresh gingerbread and the advent songs of the Going Anklöpfler. The Ellmauer Stubenmusi and the Going horn blowers give their musical contribution to the "Christkindlmarkt". Advent in Söll centres around the artistic large nativity scene in the village centre. Two local artists created the unique life sized, handpainted figures in the stable that they built out of centuries old wood.
From the beginning of advent the nativity scene makes locals and guests alike stop and stare in wonder. On St.Nicholas day the action moves to the loud and colourful "Perchten Show" by the Salvenstadl at the entrance of Söll. This alpine tradition features devilish masks with giant bodies of straw, the "Perchten". They travel in groups from the far reaches of the region, to exorcise the winter spirits with their wild antics.
Customs and traditions are still authentically practised In the four villages of Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll. The pre-Christmas period is a particularly atmospheric time to experience them, when the old church squares are transformed into advent markets with many of the region's handicrafts. They make for a delightfull stroll through the snow covered villages with the enchanting spicy aroma of mulled wine and the charming sound of folk music wafting in the winter air.
