Harp music, fresh butter milk and cool refreshments for tired feet!
Route: Gruttenhütte - Hintersteiner See
Kaiserkrone - stage 2
Set out westwards from the Gruttenhütte on the driving path 14a; after approx. 15 minutes, turn into the Wilder Kaiser path (WKS) 823 below the Kaiserkopf via a few steps. Stay north-west on the WKS and hike over the Lenggries (one of the largest rubble cirques at the Wilder Kaiser) through fragrant pine and mountain forests below the Kaiser summits Treffauer and Tuxeck. You will always have the Kitzbühel Alps and the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern in view.
The wildly romantic high Kaiser mountain meadow below the Sonnenstein has no cottage but is a wonderful place to stop and take pictures.
Continue on along the Wilder Kaiser path 821/823 to the Steiner Hochalm (1,257 m). At a comfortable rest, cottage keepers Maridi and Peter will serve spontaneous harp music and songs with your drinks (no food!).
Inspired by this, you will continue on along the driving path and later the high path 821 downwards towards Bärnstatt/Hintersteiner See to the St. Leonhard chapel. Turning slightly South, there will already be two accommodations available for more leisurely hikers (Gasthof Bärnstatt and Bauernhof Beinstingl) – or you can follow the street to the Cafè Restaurant Seestüberl on the Eastern banks of the Hintersteiner See.
At the parking place Hintersteiner See/Seestüberl, you will turn South into the forest, where the lake round path 822 runs idyllically to the western banks of the crystal-clear mountain lake. Where the path hits the road, you will hike North to the Pension Maier, which is also a good inn to have a meal at and to spend the night. Further overnight accommodations on the West banks are the Pension Hagenhof and the Bauernhof Goingstätt.
Take along enough food for this leg!
Advice: Hintersteiner See
Advice: Hintersteiner SeeThe crystal-clear teal mountain lake offers a welcome refreshment for tired feet. The water fed by subterranean sprints is of the best quality, as confirmed by views of down to 10 metres under water. The beach bath on the Eastern banks is ideal to recover after an exhausting day's leg.
