Jubiläumssteig Wilder Kaiser

Idyllic rocky setting near the Gruttenhütte (1.620m)

This scenic and very beautiful high path, by the name of Jubiläumssteig, has everything that makes a hike in the Wilder Kaiser special: idyllic rocky setting, beautiful viewing points and traditional alpine huts. The first goal of this tour is the Gaudeamushütte, the original building was built by the Berlin section of the academic alpine association in 1899 in the Kübelkar on the south side of the Kaiser massif. It was not a good position and the hut was destroyed by an avalanche in 1924. In 1927 the Berlin section built the new hut 300m further east on the present location at 1,263 metres.

From the sunny terrace you have an impressive view of the Ellmauer Tor and of the massive rockface of the Vorderen Karlspitze which has numerous climbing routes graded at the higher end of the scale. It is an easy walk from the Wochenbrunneralm to the popular Gaudeamushütte. This makes an ideal starting point for many hikes and also for the most difficult climbing challenges on the rocks.

Many famous climbers and also several of the hut's tenants have planned their first climbs from the comfort of the Gaudeamushütte. The Jubiläumssteig leads through interesting rocky landscape from the Gruttenhütte to the Kübelkar (or vice versa). The Jubiläumstieg is an ideal start for beginners to fixed cable routes as it is not too difficult and is well secured (see information box).
