Up to the Ellmauer Halt (2.344 m) on the south side
The Gamsängersteig leads up to the highest summit in the Wilder Kaiser, the Ellmauer Halt. It is a black/very difficult mountain path, partially secured with ropes and applied with stepping brackets, and container climbing points of the 1st degree of difficulty. The overall stamina requirements on the Ellmauer Halt should not be underestimated. About 1,260 height meters must be covered from the parking place of the Wochenbrunner Alm. From the Gruttenhütte, you can hike across a well-marked path into a large rubble cirque below the Ellmauer Halt. This is where you will find the entrance to the Gamsängersteig. (Babenstuber Hütte – emergency bivouac possible) The entrance can be reached from the Wochenbrunner Alm via the Gruttenhütte in approx. 2 - 2 ½ hours. Good balance and particularly freeness of vertigo are absolutely required! Recommendation: helmet and a climbing harness & fixed-rope route set for inexperienced climbers.
