Solstice fires in Tyrol
When the mountains in Tyrol are ablaze
At the summer solstice, when the longest day and the shortest night meet, alpine areas have for centuries heralded the sun with fires on the mountain - the solstice fires in Tyrol. On this evening, throughout Austria, and in the mountainous region of Tyrol in particular, numerous groups head up the mountains to light their own fires. This tradition is also celebrated with great gusto throughout the Wilder Kaiser region. Guests and locals alike get to experience the "Burning Mountains" in the Wilder Kaiser (Wild Emperor), when summits glow in the evening sky, as do the grass mountains and the Kitzbühel Alps opposite. On the night of the solstice the Hartkaiser, Brandstadl and Hochsöll cable cars run until late to bring folks to the summery solstice fires and mountain parties around Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll. The Wilder Kaiser solstice fires will light up the mountains on the evening of the 23nd June 2018 and will be lit when darkness falls, from 9.00 p.m.
