Ellmau the film village

Film locations in the Wilder Kaiser

ONE, TWO, THREE - ACTION! Numerous film productions like "Ruf der Berge", "Die Hüttenwirtin", "Wilder Kaiser", "Weihnachten mit Marianne und Michael", and especially "Der Bergdoktor" showcase the beauty of our village. Through these programmes the quaint "Rübezahl-Alm" on the Hartkaiser is known far and wide, making it a popular celebrity meeting point, not that Ellmau is tempted to become "chic" - it still has a casual fun atmosphere. New episodes of the TV series "Der Bergdoktor" are once again being filmed in our idyllic Tyrolean village from the beginning of June until December, when the film trucks are often part of the scenery!

Film locations in the Wilder Kaiser

Rübezahlalm

The former Kössleralm, now called the "Rübezahl-Alm", was built in 1778 and has always been family owned. The Rübezahlalm is on the Hartkaiser and can only be reached on foot or in winter on skis. So far the mountain inn has starred in the following films: "Lustige Musikanten mit Marianne & Michael", "Der Wilde Kaiser", "Melodien der Berge", "Herzlichst Hansi Hinterseer", "Musik am Wilden Kaiser", "Weißblaue Gschichtn", "Weihnachtsmänner gibt es nicht", "Lensen und Partner", "Die Hüttenwirtin" and many more.

Marcherbauer

The farmhouse belonging to the Resch family is in the district of March in Ellmau. Siegfried Rauch, Enzi Fuchs, Max Krückel, Sonja Forcher and Andrea L'arronge and many other TV-actors know the old farmhouse from filming the programmes: "Der Ruf der Berge" and "Wilder Kaiser". The March farmer's wife has always got plenty of interesting tales from filming to tell on the film location hikes.

Heimatmuseum Ellmau

First built as a miner's house in 1555, the Heimatmuseum was rebuilt in its present form in 1898 by the master carpenter and son of the path maker Johann Widauer. The Ellmau Heimatmuseum (local history museum), located in the district of Steinerner Tisch, is open every Friday in Summer from 2pm - 6pm and can be visited free of charge. The following programmes have been filmed in the Heimatmuseum: "Weihnachten mit Marianne und Michael", "Musik vom Wilden Kaiser mit Hansi Kiesler" and many more.

Postbauer Bed & Breakfast

The Postbauer Bed & Breakfast run by the Leitner family and situated directly on the Kirchplatz in Ellmau was used as the priest's office in the TV series "Der Wilde Kaiser" . Max Krückl plays the role of Ellmau's priest in the seven 90 minute episodes. The Postbauer bed & breakfast was also used as a location in the film "Heimkehr mit Hindernissen" starring popular singer Hansi Hinterseer as well as for several music shoots, making it the premier pension for film locations.

Bergkaiser-Hartkaiser

The Hartkaiser with its breath taking mountain scenery is a rewarding day out that can be reached on the funicular railway or on the numerous walking paths. The highlight of the Hartkaiser is Ellmi's Zauberwelt adventure world in summer and in the winter the numerous ski pistes of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental. The 360 degree view so highly rated by film producers makes it well worth a visit at any time of year!

Wochenbrunner Alm

The Wochenbrunner Alm is located directly at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser and is a popular place to walk to or to enjoy good food and drink with friends. It is possible to get to the alpine inn at 1.080 m on foot, or more leisurely by car or by bus. Highlights: Game enclosure, "Kneipp" facility, produce store with a Hansi Hinterseer fan corner and small mountain zoo. The following programmes were filmed at the Wochenbrunner Alm: "Herzlich Grüße aus Ellmau mit Marianne und Michael", "Weihnachten mit Marianne und Michael", "Musik vom Wilden Kaiser" mit Hansi Kiesler, "Heimkehr mit Hindernissen" mit Hansi Hinterseer and many more.

Brenner Alm

The Brenneralm on the Hausberg mountain has a huge impressive view over the Wilder Kaiser. The interior of the inn was used for the filming of "Die Hüttenwirtin" in summer 2009 as was the Rübezahlalm.

Ellmau Pfarrkirche (parish church)

The parish church was built between 1740 and 1746 by Jakob Singer from Schwaz. The following programmes were filmed here: "Der Wilde Kaiser", "Der Ruf der Berge", "Weihnachten mit Marianne und Michael" and many more.

Maria-Heimsuchungskapelle

The Visitation of Mary chapel was built in 1721 by Johann Kaisermann from Ellmau and is the landmark of the village of Ellmau. The chapel has appeared "on the box" several times, including several romantic scenes in "Der Bergdokotor". Scenes from: "Wilder Kaiser", "Weihnachten mit Marianne & Michael", "Sonntagskonzert", "Der Bergdoktor" have also been filmed here.

Ellmauer Alm

On the edge of Ellmau is the Ellmauer Alm and it's lovely wooden architecture is a magnet for film producers and their cameras: "Weihnachten mit Marianne und Michael", "Der Wilde Kaiser", "Silvesterparty mit Marianne und Michael", "Alpenrock", "Musik vom Wilden Kaiser" and many more were filmed here.

Bergdoktor pratice

In the district of Faistenbichl in Ellmau is the doctor's practice for "Der Bergdoktor". The Faistenbichl is part of the mellow wooded foothills of the Kitzbüheler Alps, a lovely walking area and also a pilgrim's route. The historic Jakobsweg (Way of St. James), an old pilgrim's route that leads right across Europe, leads over the Faistenbichl and past the practice of the "Bergdoktor". The Bergdoktor practice is in an old farmhouse that was first mentioned in Ellmau chronicles in 1694. The "Hinterschnabl" farmhouse is the family home of the long serving mayor of Ellmau Hans Leitner and he took the farm over from his mother in 1985. The family had opened a bed & breakfast in the village, so the living area of the farm was not in use when it came to the attention of the film crew. The Hinterschnabl continues to be a working farm. The Bergdoktorpraxis can be viewed every Tuesday and Friday in summer from 10am - 12am (apart from when filming is taking place).

Gasthof Föhrenhof

Also popular with locals, the Gasthaus Föhrenhof in the district of Auwald is used for the interior shots of the "Gasthaus Wilder Kaiser" in the TV series "Der Bergdoktor" that is run by "Susanne Dreiseitl" on screen.

Gruttenhütte

The Gruttenhütte was opened in July 1900. The alpine hut at 1620m is the starting point for numerous climbing tours in the limestone massif of the Wilder Kaiser and has been very popular with climbers since it opened. Some of the Wilder Kaiser mountain scenes in the TV servies "Der Bergdoktor" were filmed in the vicinity of the Gruttenhütte. The highest located hut in the Wilder Kaiser can be reached on foot along a timber trail or for those experienced in the mountains there is a rewarding ascent through the "Klamml" from the Wochenbrunneralm.
