Wilder Kaiser launches “pathbreaking” 3D Hiking Maps on the Internet and on GPS Mobiles
The latest service success to come from the renowned innovative Wilder Kaiser holiday region in Tyrol can be described as “pathbreaking” in the truest sense of the word. On a high resolution, three-dimensional hiking map, all the hiking routes in Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll can be observed in the “
flight of an eagle” on the internet at www.wilderkaiser.info and loaded onto your GPS mobile or printed out as a PDF document.
On 29th May, the 3D hiking map, which is unique in the complexity of its features, was officially activated on the “Hartkaiser” in Ellmau. Commissioned by the Wilder Kaiser Tourist Association, the Alpstein Austria company has managed to accurately georeference and digitalise the entire 400 km network of trails in the region in just nine months. By means of spectacular
3D panoramic flights, high resolution digital
aerial photographs, the guest currently chooses from
20 top tours, correctly estimates the timeframes required for them and in doing so removes in advance any concern that the identified route might overexert his
physical constitution. An
individual hiking tour can be planned conveniently and in a matter of seconds – with all the important information such as walking time, altitude difference,
rest stops, suitability for mountain bikes or children’s pushchairs, terrain and soil conditions and much more. In the future, it will also be possible to “conquer” ski slopes, cable cars and lifts, toboggan runs, ski tours and snowshoe hikes on a 3D winter map.

Peter Landlinger, representative of the Wilder Kaiser region, and managing director Ingunn Bindhammer have a right to be proud of launching an exemplary project in the booming hiking segment with this 3D hiking map. Landlinger: “This is just the beginning. This service embraces enormous imagination. We are convinced it will take off at a similar pace as navigation systems in cars, for example!” Alpstein’s director Bernhard Wimmer announced a handing over of the system for the next few months to the Wilder Kaiser region, which will then be able to maintain and expand the system independently. The cost of this innovation, described by the tourist association (TVB) as the “third dimension of hiking”, amounts to around 150,000 euros including signposting and printed hiking maps. |
