This three-day Alpine hut hike takes you to visit the
prettiest spots on the south side of the Kaisergebirge range. The Kaiser crossing begins at the natural bathing lake in Going, follows the Wilder Kaiser track to the Gruttenhütte hut and continues along the Adlerweg (Eagle Trail) to the Hintersteinersee lake. Then on the third day you can either go to the Walleralm mountain inn or head up to the Scheffauer summit and back into the valley. Thanks to the south-facing aspect and moderate altitude, the tour can be enjoyed from
as early as June until mid October. |

It is safe to say the three day hiking tour on the south side of the Wilder Kaiser is one of the most beautiful hikes in Tyrol. It is the ideal tour to start the hiking season as the stages are not as challenging and the mountain cabins are already open in May. The crossing of the Kaiser mountain range will lead you from the nature swimming lake in Going accross the Adlerweg to the Gaudeamushütte mountain cabin, towards the Hintersteiner lake and on the third dayvia the Walleralm mountain cabin back to the valley. |

Day 1
The three-day hike from hut to hut starts at the lake in Going (750m), one of the prettiest natural bathing lakes in Tyrol. You can leave your car there free of charge too. Leaving the lake the route goes to the Aschau car park and on a forest trail to the quaint Graspoint Niederalm hut (1,075m). Just before the
Obere Regalm (1,313m) the forest thins out and you get a sensational first look at the Kitzbühel Alps: the white peaks of the Kitzsteinhorn, Großglockner and Großvenediger gleam to the south. A stop-off at the Obere Regalm run by landlady Anni Foidl comes highly recommended – don’t miss the homemade farmhouse bread with the special homemade spread. Anni will also gladly provide you with information about the rest of your trek. On the first stage of the
Adlerweg (Eagle Trail), an extended hiking trail comprising 126 stages across Tyrol, the tour continues to the Baumgartnerkopf (1,572m). Hiking guides call the Baumgartnerkopf a “hot spot” as it presents superb photo opportunities. Continue on the Adlerweg trail down from the Baumgartnerkopf towards the
Gaudeamushütte (1,276m) and stay overnight there (dorm mattresses or beds). The homemade dumplings (pressed and fried cheese dumplings, spinach dumplings) and Anni’s delicious cakes are simply to die for.

Day 2
After an unforgettable "breakfast on the mountain" and the sun on your back you walk to the "Ellmauer stone circle", an energetically and magnetic natural force field and furthermore you can enjoy the romantic area around the Kaiser Hochalm (1,417m). Mountain pines and wildflower meadows present a picture of harmony; the Alpine Rose is in bloom here from mid June until mid July. The landlord of the Steiner Hochalm hut (1,257m) is famous for his love of music and will serenade you at the drop of a hat. In any event, we recommended a rest at this romantic spot as you are not very far from your destination, the Hintersteinersee lake (880m). The
Bärnstatt mountain inn-guesthouse and the
Seestüberl restaurant situated on the eastern shore of the lake are great places to stay. If your legs can handle a few more kilometres, enjoy a refreshing dip and then walk south of the lake to
Gasthof Mair,
Pension Hagenhof or
Bauernhof Goingstätt. The evening reflection of the Wilder Kaiser in the crystal clear waters of the Hintersteinersee lake is an image that would win you photographic competitions.

Day 3
The third day takes you from
the Hintersteinersee lake straight to the Stöfflhütte and on to the Walleralm (1,171m). At the Stöfflhütte you simply must try their home-brewed beer; it goes really well with a cheese and cold meat board known as a “Brettljause”. Take a short detour to the
Kreuzbichl (1,206m) and you will rewarded with a panoramic view of the Inn Valley stretching as far as the Kitzbühel Alps. From the Walleralm the route follows the Wilder-Kaiser-Steig heading east to the already encountered
Steiner Hochalm (1,257m). After a final break at the Hinterschiesslingeralm (1,020m) you continue through the Rehbachklamm gorge and into
the centre of Scheffau. The free KaiserJet bus takes hikers back to the starting point at the

Day 2
It’s worth getting up early when staying at the Gruttenhütte (1,600m). As the sun comes up from behind the Loferer Steinberge range, bathing the walls of the Wilder Kaiser in a soft light, you witness the world in the valley wake up and feel truly sublime. With the sun on your back, the Wilder-Kaiser-Steig now leads from the Gruttenhütte along the foot of the Tuxeck and Treffauer and into the romantic area around the Kaiser Hochalm (1,417m). Day 3
Hikers with a sure foot and a head for heights can top off the final day by conquering the Scheffauer summit. At 2,111 metres above sea level, it is the highest peak in the western part of the Kaiser mountains. The 1,250 meter ascent takes about 2.5 hours. From the Steiner Hochalm a path leads first through a hardwood forest, large glades and open pasture, then through steep fields of mountain pine and rocky terrain towards the summit. Descend via the same track and follow the normal route down from the Steiner Hochalm
to the Hinterschiesslingeralm (1,020m) and continue through the Rehbachklamm gorge and into
the centre of Scheffau. The free KaiserJet bus takes hikers back to the starting point at the
